And So It Begins…Again

And so it begins again.  You get a little time on your hands and suddenly the blog gets updated, the cafepress store gets updated….all because of a little snowstorm.  Well, not so little.  It started Monday night:  snow, ice, ice, rain, ice, and then A LOT of snow again.  Luckily we kept our electricity but we are now out of school for the rest of the week and I have a lot of time on my hands.  A first in quite a while, obviously if you look at the date of my last post.  My goal is to keep it updated more often.  I would love to have new cartoons … I will certainly give it a try.  What’s happened since the last post?  A broken leg, a kitchen remodel, and several other events have left me with a lot more material for cartoons, that’s for sure.  So….stay tuned!

  • It was the fall of 1958 when I entered sixth grade. At that time we were not allowed to wear slacks or jeans to school, only dresses and skirts. This was a public school. We were not even allowed to wear jeans or slacks to any kind of athletic event. Most girls wore “bobby socks” or knee socks with loafers or saddle oxford shoes (the black and white kind). We probably looked kind of dorky but we were the height of fashion, at the time.
The teacher I remember most was Mrs. Turner. She was our English teach (not language arts). She was so strict but I adored her. One of the things I most liked was telephone book races. She would hand out all these phone books and call out a name. The one that called out the phone number first got a mark by their name. At the end of the session the one with the most marks won the prize. She also had us diagram a lot of sentences. This taught us the parts of speech. I don’t think you do that now. Mrs. Turner also lined us up in rows that were named after birds. One row would be called the red birds, one the blue birds, one the yellow birds, etc. Everyone knew the red birds made the best grades and the yellow birds did not. They couldn’t fool a savy sixth grader!
Another thing that I remember is never having a snow day. We lived in the country and our bus traveled over gravel roads but never a snow day. Our bus driver was named Joe and we all loved him. He would put on chains on the tires of the truck and off we would go.
Girls did not do sports. We only played softball in gym class and hop scotch at recess. That is something that has changed and I am so glad that girls are playing sports more now.

  • Wow !! What a great story! Thanks so much for sharing!
